New Year - Healthy Pet.

As we enter 2025, it’s a perfect time to focus on New Year pet wellness goals for our pawsome pals. Why should humans get all the resolution-setting fun, right?

Setting healthy habits for pets can help you build up your bond with your pet and promote your cat’s or dog’s health. The team at Bayside Animal Hospital has three wellness goals to set with your pet as we ring in the new year.

3 Healthy Pet Resolutions for the New Year

1. Make Daily Exercise a Priority

One of the simplest, yet most powerful pet health tips is to keep your pet moving. Whether it’s regular walks for dogs or stimulating play for cats, exercise improves your furry friend’s physical and mental health.

If you (and your pet) are bored of the usual activities, now’s the perfect time to try some new ones. Sign your dog up for an agility class and learn how to help her navigate exciting obstacle courses. Grab a new laser toy or cat tree to get your cat moving.

When you and your pets get active every day, your pet can stay strong, healthy, and physically fit.

2. Schedule Routine Veterinary Checkups

One of the most important yearly to-dos is making sure your pet has regular vet checkups. We all get busy, but routine vet visits are a must. They help your veterinary team monitor weight, update vaccines, get your pet on parasite preventives, and catch early signs of health issues.

Puppies, kittens, senior pets, and furry friends with chronic health conditions should be seen twice a year. Healthy adult dogs can come in once a year for a nose-to-tail wellness visit. Your veterinarian can also help you make the best choices for pet nutrition and offer important pet care strategies during these visits.

3. Improve Oral Health Habits

Good dental hygiene is often overlooked in pet care strategies, but it’s essential for your pet’s long-term health. Poor oral health can lead to dangerous conditions that affect the entire body, and these conditions are easy to prevent with good dental care.

If we veterinarians had it our way, you’d be brushing your pet’s teeth every day! But we know that can be difficult to do.

So instead, focus on:

  • Brushing your pet’s teeth at least three times a week
  • Offering daily dental chews
  • Using a vet-approved water additive

Together, these strategies can help prevent plaque buildup and keep your pet’s breath smelling like roses.

Finally, schedule your pet’s yearly dental cleaning as part of your New Year’s resolutions for your pet. We recommend a thorough dental exam and cleaning at least once a year.

This helps us catch potential oral health issues early and treat them before they become a bigger problem.
